Please join AWMI Chicago on Thursday May 20th at 12:00pm CST as we sit down with Deana Lecy (Director of Metals Programs with North American Steel Alliance) & Chris Concari (Senior Director of Customer Service for Cleveland Cliffs Steel) to discuss how AWMI has fostered professional and personal growth for these Metal Industry Executives.

Deana Lecy

Director of Metals Programs with North American Steel Alliance

Deana earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Valparaiso University and completed her MBA at Loyola University – Chicago. Additionally, she sought out many company sponsored training programs to further her management and leadership development.

Her 31-year career in the metals industry began her with Bethlehem Steel as part of the infamous “sales looper program” where she was the only woman in this year-long training program. From there she held various Sales & Marketing positions with responsibilities including contract negotiations with Fortune 100 companies, development and implementation of automotive strategy for merged organizations, senior management of commercial and operations departments, leadership development, and representation on various cross-functional teams aimed at process improvement.

As the industry faced bankruptcy and consolidation, Deana went to work for a privately held engineering company that serves the metals industries before accepting a position with North American Steel Alliance in 2017. During this time she gained experience running a small business that has proven beneficial in her current role.

Deana celebrates her 30th year of AWMI membership where she has served in various board positions and where she enjoys mentoring young women in the metals industry.

Chris Concari

Senior Director of Customer Service for Cleveland Cliffs Steel

Chris graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1986, with a class of 30 metallurgists, including 4 women. She also earned a Master of Administrative Science from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1991.

Chris began her career in the Met Department at the Armco Stainless Bar, Rod and Wire plant in Baltimore. Chris joined the Quality department of Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point in 1989, working in almost every part of the carbon flat roll steel mill: Steelmaking, Hot and Cold Mills; Coating lines; Tech Service and Quality Management. After nearly 21 years at Sparrows Point – through Bethelehem Steel’s bankruptcy in 2003, the subsequent purchases by ISG, Arcelor Mittal, and Severstal, Chris had the opportunity to try her hand at Sales, as ThyssenKrupp Steel USA started up their brand new steel mill in Calvert, Alabama. It was a great time to combine her technical background with the Commercial side of the business.

TKS eventually sold the plant to ArcelorMittal USA, where she was promoted to Director of the non-Automotive Customer Service teams in 2016, adding the Automotive customer service team in 2017. With the purchase of AMUSA by Cleveland Cliffs, Chris now leads the entire Carbon customer service team for Cleveland Cliffs, including Automotive, Flat Roll carbon steel, Plate and Tinplate products.

Chris has been a member of AWMI since 2010 and also serves on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
