Drelis Crossley earned her Metallurgical and Materials Engineering degree in Chicago at Illinois Institute of Technology.
She began her career at National Steel in Portage, IN. She was hired as a Management Associate. Through various rotations and promotions at National for 13 years she worked in Cold Roll Products, including Motor Lamination Steels; Tin Mill Products; and Galvanized and Galvalume construction products. There she was a quality supervisor, product metallurgist, senior metallurgist and process engineer.
She moved on to Nucor Steel to participate in a mill startup project in Hickman Arkansas. For 2 years she was the Galvanize Metallurgist where she trained numerous operators, inspectors, testers and other young metallurgists about Galvanized products. She hired the lab staff and inspectors and specified all of the test equipment required for analysis and testing of Galvanized products.
Another opportunity presented itself to move to Terre Haute, Indiana for another new mill startup. This mill was the former Heartland Steel which was later acquired by Companhia Siderurgica Nacional. CSN is a highly regarded Brazilian Steel company and Heartland Steel is their first venture in the States. Drelis has been employed with CSN, LLC for 12 years now and is currently the Commercial Quality Manager working out of the Chicago-area sales office. She has visited the plant in Volta Redonda, Brazil and can count on her friends there for technical support as well. She is in the plant in Terre Haute a week out of every month.
Drelis has a son who is in his second year of college, hopefully taking on the family tradition of engineering. She stays extremely busy with travel, a theatre review group, a host of friends and extended family.
After 27 years in the steel industry she is still in awe when she sees a blast furnace charge or a new customer part or a defect that nobody has ever seen before. Every day is still interesting and challenging and she works with some phenomenal people at CSN.
